“I’m sorry, Dad.”

So, the night before last, Jack has the idea that he knows how to make it snow. He puts his pajamas on inside out, flushes an ice cube down the toilet, and sleeps with a spoon under his pillow.

He wakes up to pouring rain, and it rains all day. Late last night, while still raining and very windy, Char and I heard a huge ‘thump’ from outside. One of our large elm trees was uprooted and came crashing to the ground, narrowly missing a couple other trees and completely covering the roadway.

On the way to school today, Jack says, “I’m sorry, Dad.”

“For what?”

“For making it rain,” he answered.

So… I was torn. I could tell him that his little ritual didn’t really make it rain and possibly crush him. Or I could just accept his apology.

The choice was ultimately easy. I said, “Next time, try flushing two ice cubes.”

"I’m Gonna Miss You, Daddy."

I always knew being a parent would be challenging. But I never expected this much of a challenge from a 2-1/2 year old.

Picture this: The car is fully loaded for the trip to Florida. Everything is in place except the kids. I’ve gotten Abby and Grace in the car and I’m working on getting them buckled. Having some difficulty, I resorted to threats:

“If you want to go to the beach, I need you to get in your seats,” says I.

Not much response.

“Listen guys, if you want to go with us, you’re going to have to get in your seats and get buckled.” Still no response. I decide to rephrase it.

“If you don’t get into your seats right now, we’re going to leave you at home by yourself.” This finally got their attention, though the response wasn’t what I intended.

Grace climbed out of the car, walked to the front porch, turned around and said, “I’m gonna miss you, Daddy.”

Maybe It Was Too Soon for Star Wars

Tonight, Jack decided that he wanted to read his “Dark Bader stories” before bed. Knowing he didn’t have any Darth Vader stories, I asked him to show me his book. He proudly held up the one pictured at right.

Not exactly sure what to make of this.

As I’m also not sure what to make of the fact that Darth Vader is his favorite Star Wars character. Let’s see… we have multiple characters on the side of “good,” many of which displaying plenty of human foibles to add to their charm. And we have Darth Vader, second only to the Emporer himself as “evil incarnate.” And Jack picks Vader.

Perhaps it was a little too soon, after all.
